Winter Storm Causes Rare Phenomenon in Upstate New York

A powerful winter storm swept through upstate New York, bringing with it a rare and breathtaking sight: a phenomenon known as "ice halos" or "sun dogs." These bright rings of light appeared around the sun on Monday morning, captivating residents and visitors alike.

According to eyewitnesses, the ice halos were visible in multiple locations across the region, including near Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. The unusual display was caused by the storm's unique combination of cold temperatures and atmospheric conditions.

What Are Ice Halos?

Ice halos are a type of atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when sunlight passes through ice crystals in the atmosphere. This can happen when there is a layer of thin cirrus clouds or ice crystals in the air, typically near a storm system. The result is a bright ring or "dog" surrounding the sun.

While ice halos are relatively rare, they're not unheard of in New York State. In fact, residents of the Adirondacks have reported seeing them before, particularly during the winter months when cold air and snowstorms are more common.
