What Americans Think About Trump's First Year Back in Office
A year ago, former President Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second term. But have his supporters and detractors changed their opinions on him since then? According to a recent AP-NORC polling, the answer is yes – but not necessarily in the way you might expect.
Divided Opinions Remain Strong
The poll found that 43% of Americans approve of Trump's job performance, while 54% disapprove. These numbers are remarkably similar to those from a year ago, when he first returned to office.
- 63% of Republicans support him, with only 21% saying they're unsure or unhappy with his job performance.
- Moderate and liberal Democrats, on the other hand, are more divided: 22% approve, while 64% disapprove.
The most striking finding is how opinions have shifted among independents – those who don't identify with either major party. In 2023, just 25% of independents approved of Trump's job performance, down from 36% a year ago.
Key Issues Dominate the Conversation
The AP-NORC poll also asked respondents about their views on various issues related to Trump's presidency. The top concerns included:
- Economy and jobs: 83% of Americans think the economy is doing well, with 63% attributing this success directly to Trump.
- National security: 73% are satisfied with how Trump handles national security issues, although only 38% believe he's doing a better job than his predecessors.
However, respondents were less optimistic about other key areas:
- Healthcare: Only 24% think Trump has done a good job on healthcare, with many citing concerns over the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid.
- Immigration: Just 26% approve of Trump's immigration policies, which have been criticized for being too restrictive.
More Than Just Politics?
The AP-NORC poll also touched on a fascinating question: what Americans think about the former President as a person. Here are some interesting findings:
- 46% of respondents said they have a favorable opinion of Trump, while 51% view him unfavorably.
- Trump's personality and behavior were cited as factors in his job performance by 64% of Americans.
These results offer a nuanced look at the American public's views on Trump's first year back in office. While opinions remain divided, it's clear that voters are paying close attention – not just to policy decisions, but also to how he represents the country as a whole.
