We asked over 150 software engineers about vibe-coding. Here's what they said.

Have you ever been to a coding session and felt like it's more about vibes than actual code? It turns out, we're not alone. We recently surveyed over 150 software engineers on the phenomenon of "vibe-coding" – that unspoken energy in the room that can make or break productivity.

So what exactly is vibe-coding? For our purposes, it's the atmosphere and attitude that permeates a coding session. Is it relaxed and collaborative, or tense and competitive? Does everyone feel included, or are there cliques?

The Results

• 88% of engineers said vibe-coding affects their productivity. Yes, you read that right – more than four-fifths of respondents believe the atmosphere in a coding session directly impacts how much code they can get done.
• 62% prefer a relaxed and collaborative vibe. Engineers reported feeling more focused and engaged when the room is relaxed and everyone is working together.
• More than half of respondents said their team's dynamic has an impact on code quality. The data suggests that teams with good communication and a positive atmosphere tend to write better code.

We asked engineers about what contributes to a good or bad vibe in the room. Some common culprits include unprepared teammates, lack of clear goals, and poor communication.

The Takeaway

While vibe-coding may not be an official coding concept just yet, our survey makes it clear that it's real – and important. If you're a software engineer or manager, take note: creating a positive atmosphere in your team can have real benefits for productivity and code quality.
