USDA: Costco has a serious problem with its $4.99 chicken

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently released some surprising data on the safety and quality of chicken sold at major retailers, including warehouse club chain Costco.

According to the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, Costco has been found to have a higher-than-average rate of salmonella contamination in its $4.99 rotisserie chickens. The birds are sourced from suppliers in several states, but it's unclear at this point which specific facilities or farms may be responsible for the issues.

Rotisserie chicken is a staple item at Costco, with millions sold annually across the country. While the USDA did not indicate that consumers should avoid purchasing these chickens entirely, they do recommend taking precautions when handling and cooking poultry to minimize the risk of foodborne illness.

So what can you do to stay safe while enjoying your affordable dinner? For starters, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling raw chicken. You should also keep the bird refrigerated at a temperature below 40°F (4°C) until cooking.
