This CEO Laid Off Nearly 80% of His Staff Because They Refused to Adopt AI Fast Enough
Imagine being a business leader, knowing that adopting cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial for your company's survival and growth. But, despite the mounting pressure from investors and industry experts, you're met with resistance from within – specifically from nearly 80% of your staff. This scenario may sound like the stuff of horror stories, but it's a reality that some CEOs face every day. One such CEO is John Lee, former head of AI firm Fundament14. Two years ago, he made the bold decision to lay off approximately 70 employees due to their reluctance to adapt to AI at the same pace as the rest of the industry. The layoffs were reportedly met with shock and even anger from some employees. Lee, however, stood by his decision, stating that it was necessary for the company's future success. "I had to make a choice between the people who could see what I saw – that we needed to move faster on AI – and those who didn't," he explained. Fast forward two years, and Lee is now reflecting on the experience. While acknowledging that the decision wasn't easy, he maintains that it was the right one for Fundament14's survival and growth. "If I had to do it again, I'd make the same choice," he said in a recent interview. The question remains: what does this say about the state of AI adoption within companies? Is Lee's experience an isolated incident or a symptom of a larger issue?
