Texas sues five TV manufacturers over predatory ad-targeting spyware

Imagine turning on your TV to catch your favorite show, only to have it watching you back - literally. This is what's been happening with some smart TVs from major manufacturers. Texas has now taken action against five TV makers for allegedly installing software that tracks viewers' browsing habits and sells the data to advertisers.

The lawsuit claims that these companies are using the spyware to target ads at specific individuals, essentially turning their TVs into personal surveillance devices. This practice raises serious concerns about consumer privacy and has sparked a heated debate over the ethics of tech giants collecting user data without consent.

What's happening with your TV?

Some popular smart TVs from brands like Vizio, TCL, Hisense, and LeEco are allegedly installing ad-tracking software on devices. This means that even when you're not actively using the TV, it can be collecting data about your viewing habits and selling it to advertisers.

How does this affect you?

• Your personal data could be being sold without your consent
• You may start seeing targeted ads on your TV based on your browsing history
• The lawsuit alleges that some TVs are even capable of collecting data on voice commands and gestures

What can you do to protect yourself?

While the exact implications of this practice are still unclear, there are steps you can take to safeguard your personal data:

• Avoid installing apps that request sensitive permissions on your TV
• Check your device settings for any suspicious or unapproved software
• Consider using a reputable ad-blocker or VPN to mask your online activity
