Tesla Driver Weighs In on Electric vs Gas: 'The Math No One Wants to Talk About'

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain traction in the US market, one of the biggest debates among car enthusiasts is whether they're truly worth the investment. Tesla driver and owner, Rachel Jenkins, recently shared her thoughts on the matter, pointing out a crucial aspect that's often overlooked: the cost of owning an EV versus a gas-powered car.

Jenkins, who has owned her Tesla Model 3 for three years, argues that the math is often skewed in favor of gas cars. "People say EVs are more expensive to purchase upfront," she says, "but they don't talk about the long-term costs." According to Jenkins, studies have shown that EV owners can save up to $1,000 per year on fuel costs alone.

So, what's behind the math? One major factor is the cost of replacing a gas-powered car's internal combustion engine versus an EV's electric motor. While it may seem more expensive upfront, EV motors last significantly longer – often up to 200,000 miles or more – whereas gas engines typically need to be replaced every 50,000 to 100,000 miles.

Of course, there are other costs associated with EV ownership, such as charging infrastructure and potential range anxiety. However, for many owners like Jenkins, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. "My Tesla has saved me so much money on fuel alone," she says. "Plus, it's just a more enjoyable driving experience – quieter, smoother, and more responsive."

So, is an EV right for you?

  • Consider your daily commute: If you have a short drive to work or school, an EV might be perfect.
  • Research local charging infrastructure: Make sure there are plenty of charging stations near your home and workplace.
  • Weigh the costs: Calculate your long-term savings on fuel, maintenance, and other expenses.
