Superbug Hits 27 States: Here's Where the Deadly Fungus Is Spreading
A potentially deadly fungal infection is spreading rapidly across the United States, with cases reported in at least 27 states, according to recent data.
The fungus, known as Candida auris (C. auris), was first identified in the US in 2016 and has since been linked to numerous hospital outbreaks and deaths. While it's not yet clear how the fungus is spreading so quickly, experts warn that it could be related to changes in antibiotic use and an aging population.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that C. auris has been identified in patients from coast to coast, with cases reported in 27 states including major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
States most affected by the outbreak include:
- New York
- New Jersey
- Pennsylvania
- Florida
- Texas
- California
- Illinois
While the CDC notes that C. auris is often found in hospital environments, it can also spread through person-to-person contact and contaminated surfaces.
Health experts stress that while the fungus is a serious concern, it's not yet clear if it will become a widespread pandemic like COVID-19. However, they urge the public to be aware of the risks and take precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
We'll continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
