Superbug Hits 27 States: Here's Where the Deadly Fungus is Spreading
A concerning trend has emerged across the United States as a deadly fungus known as Candida auris, or C. auris for short, has infected patients in 27 states. This superbug is making headlines due to its rapid spread and alarming rate of infection.
According to reports, the fungus was first detected in the US in 2016 but has since become a growing concern. It's especially prevalent in healthcare settings, where it can be particularly hard to contain.
C. auris is unlike other fungal infections due to its resistance to treatment with common antifungal medications. This makes it extremely difficult for doctors to effectively treat patients who have contracted the fungus.
Where Is C. Auris Spreading?
- New York City has been hit particularly hard, with over 400 reported cases as of last year.
- Oklahoma and Maryland are also among the top states for reported infections.
- Cases have also popped up in California, Florida, Illinois, and many other states across the country.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been working to combat the spread of C. auris, but more needs to be done to prevent its rapid growth. In the meantime, healthcare facilities must remain vigilant in monitoring for outbreaks and implementing strict infection control measures.
