Superbug Hits 27 States: Where's the Deadly Fungus Spreading?
A powerful and deadly superbug fungus has made its way across the country, infecting patients in no less than 27 states. The fungus, known as Candida auris (C. auris), has been linked to several hospital outbreaks and is considered one of the most difficult-to-treat fungal infections.
First identified in 2009, C. auris has spread rapidly across the globe, with cases reported in over 15 countries worldwide. In the United States, the fungus has infected patients in major cities from coast to coast, including New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
Where's the Fungus Spreading?
- New York: 12 cases reported
- Florida: 6 cases reported
- Illinois: 5 cases reported
- California: 4 cases reported
- And 20 other states with isolated cases
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued guidelines to help healthcare professionals identify and contain the spread of C. auris, including improved infection control measures and enhanced surveillance.
