Superbug hits 27 states: Here's where the deadly fungus is spreading

A potentially deadly fungus is spreading rapidly across the US, infecting over 600 people and claiming at least 30 lives so far. The superbug, known as Candida auris (C. auris), has been identified in 27 states, with the majority of cases reported in New York, New Jersey, and Illinois.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is sounding the alarm about this emerging threat, which can cause severe illness and even death, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

  • New York: 391 cases reported, with 32 deaths
  • New Jersey: 143 cases reported, with 14 deaths
  • Illinois: 103 cases reported, with 4 deaths
  • Other states affected include California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, among others

The CDC is working closely with state health officials to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the fungus. Meanwhile, hospitals are taking extra precautions to protect patients and staff from infection.

Candida auris is a type of fungal infection that can be difficult to treat, as it's often resistant to common antifungal medications. Symptoms can range from mild skin irritation to life-threatening organ failure.
