Superbug Hits 27 States: Here's Where the Deadly Fungus Is Spreading

A concerning new threat has emerged across the United States: a highly resistant fungus that's spreading rapidly from coast to coast. Known as Candida auris (C. auris), this superbug has infected patients in at least 27 states, and experts warn it may be more deadly than previously thought.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first reported the outbreak of C. auris back in 2016, but recent data suggests a significant uptick in cases. In fact, the CDC estimates that C. auris is responsible for over 600 infections nationwide since 2013. That number is likely an underestimate, as many cases go unreported.

So where exactly are these superbug outbreaks happening? Here's a breakdown of the states affected:

  • Northeast: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York
  • Southeast: Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina
  • Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin
  • West: Arizona, California, Nevada, Texas
  • Other states: Alabama, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia

The CDC is working closely with state and local health officials to contain the spread of C. auris, but experts warn that this fungus may be more difficult to combat than other superbugs due to its ability to resist multiple antibiotics.

What can you do to stay safe? In addition to practicing good hygiene (like washing your hands frequently), be aware of any recent outbreaks in your area and take steps to support your local healthcare system. By staying informed and vigilant, we can all play a role in keeping our communities healthy and strong.
