Superbug Hits 27 States: Here's Where the Deadly Fungus is Spreading
A highly contagious and deadly fungus has been detected in 27 states across the country, leaving health officials scrambling to contain its spread.
The fungus, known as Candida auris (C. auris), was first identified in the United States in 2016 but has since become a major concern due to its rapid growth rate and resistance to antifungal medications.
- According to recent data, C. auris has been reported in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
- The fungus has been linked to a number of hospital-acquired infections, with patients often being admitted to ICUs in critical condition.
Health experts warn that the spread of C. auris can be slowed by implementing strict infection control measures, including thorough cleaning and disinfection protocols and isolation procedures for affected patients.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working closely with state health departments to monitor the situation and provide guidance on prevention and treatment strategies.
