Superbug Hits 27 States: Here's Where the Deadly Fungus Is Spreading
A new strain of the fungus Candida auris has been spreading rapidly across the country, infecting patients in 27 states and claiming lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have confirmed that the superbug is particularly virulent, with a mortality rate of up to 60%.
The CDC warns that this strain of Candida auris is resistant to many common antifungal medications, making treatment increasingly difficult. "We're seeing an uptick in cases across the country," said a CDC spokesperson. "It's essential for healthcare professionals and patients alike to be aware of the risks associated with this fungus."
So far, the majority of cases have been reported in hospitals and long-term care facilities, where vulnerable populations are more susceptible to infection. The superbug has also been found on surfaces and equipment in these settings.
Where Is Candida Auris Spreading?
- New York: With over 200 cases reported, New York is the epicenter of the outbreak.
- Florida: The Sunshine State has seen a significant spike in infections, with over 100 confirmed cases.
- Pennsylvania: More than 50 cases have been reported in Pennsylvania, with several patients requiring hospitalization.
- Other affected states:
- North Carolina (15 cases)
- Texas (10 cases)
- Georgia (8 cases)
- Oklahoma (5 cases)
- Indiana (4 cases)
- A dozen other states have reported fewer than 5 cases each
The CDC is working closely with healthcare providers and public health officials to contain the spread of Candida auris. Meanwhile, patients are advised to take precautions, such as practicing good hygiene and staying informed about infection control practices in their facilities.
