Rain soaks Rose Parade in California and snow squalls hit Midwest and Northeast on first day of 2026

As we bid adieu to 2025, Mother Nature has decided to throw us a curveball with some wild weather patterns across the country. The first day of 2026 got off to a soggy start in California, where the iconic Rose Parade was drenched in rain.

The parade, which kicked off on New Year's Day, saw torrential downpours and strong winds causing disruptions and cancellations along its route. While it's not uncommon for some precipitation to occur during this time of year, the intensity of the rain may have been a surprise to many.

Meanwhile, winter storm warnings were issued in the Midwest and Northeast

In stark contrast to the wet weather on the West Coast, parts of the Midwest and Northeast are bracing for a winter storm that's expected to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds. With snow squalls already hitting some areas, residents are being advised to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

• The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for several states in the Midwest and Northeast, with some areas expecting up to a foot of snow
• Travelers planning to hit the roads or skies should exercise extreme caution due to poor visibility and hazardous road conditions
• Cities like Chicago and New York are expected to see significant disruptions, including flight delays and cancellations

No matter where you are in the country, it's always a good idea to stay informed about weather updates and forecasts. And if you're planning on braving the elements today, make sure to bundle up – we've got some cozy throw blankets that might just keep you warm.
