New high-resolution maps reveal earthquake risks in central Utah, UGS says

Utah residents and visitors alike have long known that the Beehive State is prone to earthquakes. But a new batch of high-resolution maps from the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) offers an unprecedented look at the quake risks lurking beneath central Utah.

The maps, which are available online and on smartphone apps like our own Car GPS Navigator, highlight areas with increased earthquake activity and provide crucial information for emergency planning.

• The maps show that several fault lines run through Salt Lake City, Tooele County, and other parts of central Utah. While some of these faults are considered inactive, others have shown recent signs of movement.
• Some areas near the Great Salt Lake have seen increased seismic activity in recent years, prompting experts to warn of potential risks for nearby communities.

While we can't predict with certainty when or where the next big quake will strike, having access to reliable information and planning ahead is key. Whether you're a long-time resident or just visiting, staying informed about earthquake risks in central Utah can help keep you safe.
