NASA makes final preparations for its first crewed moon mission in over 50 years

It's been a long time coming, but NASA is finally getting ready to send humans back to the moon. The Artemis program has been making great strides in recent months, and the agency is now putting the finishing touches on its first crewed lunar mission since Apollo.

The mission, which will see two astronauts land on the lunar surface, is a major milestone in NASA's plans to establish a sustainable presence on the moon. The spacecraft that will take the crew to the moon, the Orion, has already undergone rigorous testing and is now being integrated with the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

The astronauts themselves are also preparing for their historic journey. They've been training intensively at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, learning how to operate the spacecraft and conduct experiments on the lunar surface.

What's Next?

• NASA plans to launch the SLS rocket carrying the Orion spacecraft and crew into space in late 2023. The spacecraft will then enter into orbit around the moon, before descending to the lunar surface.
• The astronauts will spend several days on the moon's surface, conducting experiments and exploring the terrain.
• They'll also be testing out new technologies that will be used for future missions to Mars and beyond.

This mission is a major step towards NASA's long-term goal of establishing a sustainable presence on the moon. With its own base and regular crew rotations, the agency hopes to unlock new scientific discoveries and resource opportunities on the lunar surface.
