Myrtle Beach Mayor Takes Aim at Ocean Boulevard 'Flushers'

Visitors to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina's top tourist destination, have long been known for their enthusiasm for sun, sand, and surf. But it seems some of those visitors are taking things a bit too far – literally.

The city's mayor has come down on 'flushers,' individuals who intentionally clog public toilets to cause them to overflow onto the surrounding streets. According to reports, this trend is not only causing headaches for local authorities but also damaging the area's reputation and driving away potential tourists.

"It's like a plague," Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune told local media outlets. "We're flushing our reputation down the toilet." The mayor says she's been working with local businesses to address the issue, which has become increasingly prevalent in recent months.

But why are some people engaging in this behavior? It seems it's all about creating a spectacle – and getting attention on social media. "It's like a daredevil stunt," one expert told us. "They want to see how far they can take it before someone stops them."

While the allure of a social media hit might be tempting, it's hard to see the appeal in causing a public health nuisance. And for the sake of Myrtle Beach's reputation – not to mention the city's infrastructure – perhaps 'flushers' should reconsider their antics.
