Millions are pledged to a Syrian Australian man who stopped a gunman and became a national hero

Australians are rallying around a heroic young man who sprang into action when a gunman opened fire on a random passerby, leaving him critically injured. Mahdi Mohammadi, 21-year-old Sydney resident of Syrian descent, chased the perpetrator down the street, disarming them and holding them until police arrived.

Mahdi's bravery has earned him widespread admiration across Australia, with thousands donating to his family's fundraising campaign. The 2-day effort raised over AU$1 million (approximately US$700,000) for Mahdi's family, showcasing the nation's gratitude and support for their hero.

Australians have taken to social media to express their appreciation for Mahdi's selfless act, praising his quick thinking and courage in a time of crisis. "This young man embodies the values we strive for as Australians," one donor said. "His bravery and compassion are an inspiration to us all."
