KC police arrest volunteers serving free meals in Kansas City parking lot. Why?

It's a scene that sounds like something out of a movie: a group of volunteers, armed with nothing but compassion and a desire to help, gathering in a city parking lot to serve up hot, free meals to those in need.

But for the volunteers from Kansas City, Missouri who were doing just that last weekend, the reality was far from Hollywood-esque. Instead, they found themselves under arrest by local police - sparking widespread outrage and confusion over why this happened in the first place.

According to eyewitnesses, the group had set up shop in a parking lot without permission, but were otherwise not causing any disruptions or issues for nearby residents or businesses. The volunteers, who say they're simply trying to help those struggling to get by during these tough economic times, claim that they were approached by police and told they needed a permit - which they ultimately couldn't obtain.

Police have yet to comment on the incident, but it's raised questions about what constitutes 'public space' in America - and whether good intentions alone are enough to excuse breaking certain rules. It's also sparked debate over the role of law enforcement in these situations, particularly when it comes to issues like food insecurity and access to basic needs.
