Is the Stock Market Open on MLK Day? What to Know About the Holiday Trading Schedule in 2026

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, or MLK Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that honors the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we approach this important day, many Americans are wondering if the stock market will be open.

Holiday Trading Schedule 2026

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ typically observe MLK Day as a holiday, which means they will be closed for trading. This affects all stock exchange hours, including pre-market and after-hours sessions.

However, bond markets may operate on a limited schedule or have special arrangements in place. It's always a good idea to check with your financial institution or investment firm for specific information about their holiday hours and any changes to the trading schedule.

What This Means for Investors

• No stock trading will occur on MLK Day, which means you won't be able to buy or sell stocks.
• The bond market may have limited hours or special arrangements in place, but it's best to check with your financial institution first.
• If you need to make investment decisions or transactions, plan ahead and do so before the holiday weekend.
