I’m 63, just announced my retirement and got fired. Is that allowed, and what should I do now?

Imagine you've worked hard your whole life, paid into your pension fund, and finally reached retirement age. You're ready to kick back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. But when you go ahead and submit your formal notice, something unexpected happens - your boss fires you on the spot.

This is exactly what happened to a 63-year-old man in [state]. After serving his company for over three decades, he decided it was time to retire and enjoy his golden years. However, his decision didn't sit well with his employer, who promptly let him go "due to operational reasons".

But is this kind of thing allowed? According to employment law experts, the short answer is yes - but with some caveats. While it's technically possible for an employee to be fired after announcing their retirement, it's generally considered unfair and may even be against company policy.

So what should you do if you're in this situation? Here are a few suggestions:

• Contact your HR department to discuss the circumstances surrounding your termination.
• Review your employment contract to see if there's any clause that protects you from being fired after announcing your retirement.
• Consider seeking advice from an employment law expert or a trusted lawyer to understand your rights and options.
