Forecasters say ‘substantial’ snow is possible this weekend, though amounts are still unclear

The weekend weather forecast is looking increasingly snowy for many parts of the country, with meteorologists warning that substantial amounts of snow could fall in some areas.

While it's impossible to predict exactly how much snow will fall or where it will be heaviest, forecasters say that this weekend's storm system has the potential to bring significant accumulation to certain regions.

What does 'substantial' mean in weather terms?

• In this case, substantial is a bit of a vague term. But essentially, it means that the snowfall could be noteworthy - not just a light dusting, but enough to cause disruptions and travel issues.
• Forecasters are still unsure exactly how much snow will fall, or where the heaviest amounts will be concentrated.
