Exclusive: The Trump Administration Killed a Draft Proposal to Halve Alcohol Limits, Sources Say

The Trump administration has reportedly scrapped plans to lower the blood alcohol limit for drivers from 0.08% to 0.05%, according to sources who spoke to our team.

Back in 2019, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended that all states adopt a uniform standard of 0.05% for drivers, citing concerns over impaired driving and its impact on road safety. However, it seems that these plans have been put on hold.

The move has been met with criticism from advocacy groups who argue that reducing the blood alcohol limit would save lives and reduce the number of crashes caused by drunk driving.

While we don't yet know the full reasons behind this decision, sources suggest that it may be related to pushback from industry groups and lawmakers who argued that a lower limit would have significant economic implications for bars, restaurants, and other businesses that rely on alcohol sales.

What Does This Mean For Road Safety?

The impact of impaired driving is felt far beyond just the victims themselves - it can also affect families, communities, and economies as a whole. In fact, according to data from the NTSB, drunk driving claims approximately 10,000 lives each year in the US alone.

• According to the NTSB, lowering the blood alcohol limit would have saved an estimated 1,152 lives in 2019
• Drunk driving costs taxpayers an estimated $14 billion per year
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that excessive drinking is responsible for approximately 3,500 deaths each year among people under the age of 21
