As we head into cold and flu season, it can be tricky to determine whether you're dealing with a case of COVID-19 or just your average flu. Both viruses share similar symptoms, but there are some key differences that can help you figure out what's going on.
Look for these clues:
Symptom severity**: If you have COVID-19, you're more likely to experience severe fatigue, difficulty breathing, and a higher fever. The flu, on the other hand, tends to be milder.
Duration of symptoms**: COVID-19 symptoms can linger for weeks, while flu symptoms typically last around 5-7 days.
Losing your sense of smell and taste**: If you've lost your sense of smell or taste, it's more likely to be a case of COVID-19. This symptom is rare in the flu.
Age and risk factors**: Older adults, young children, and people with underlying health conditions are at higher risk for severe illness from both viruses.
When in doubt:
If you're unsure whether you have COVID-19 or the flu, it's always best to err on the side of caution and get tested. Your healthcare provider can help determine the best course of action.
Staying healthy during cold and flu season:
To minimize your chances of getting sick, make sure to:
Wash those hands**: Regular handwashing is key to preventing the spread of both viruses.
Get vaccinated**: Make sure you're up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations, including the flu shot and any COVID-19 booster shots.
Stay hydrated**: Drink plenty of fluids to help keep your immune system strong.
