Covid or Flu? Here's How to Tell the Difference

As winter settles in, it's getting harder to keep track of who has what: COVID-19, the flu, or just a nasty cold. With similar symptoms and no definitive test for each illness, it can be tough to know how to proceed.

• Coughing and Sneezing? Both COVID-19 and the flu often bring on coughs and sneezes, so this isn't a great way to tell them apart.
• Fever? High temperatures are common in both illnesses, but the severity can vary. Some people with mild cases of either disease might not even notice they have a fever.

Symptoms aside, there are some key differences between COVID-19 and the flu that may help you narrow down what's going on:

• Duration:** The flu usually lasts about a week, while COVID-19 can drag on for two weeks or more.
• Loss of Taste/Smell:** If your senses are dulled, it might be a sign that you've got COVID-19. This is less common in the flu.

Don't rely solely on at-home tests to diagnose yourself – these can have varying levels of accuracy and may not give you the whole picture. If you're feeling unwell or unsure, it's always best to consult a medical professional for guidance.
