Costco Shoplifting Couple Caught Red-Handed

When you think of Costco, you might imagine bulk purchases of toilet paper, discounted electronics, or a few dozen Kirkland Signature coffee cups. But for one Sacramento couple, their recent trip to the warehouse club took an unexpected turn – into a shoplifting arrest.

According to local authorities, the duo attempted to stash multiple bottles of liquor in their cart without paying for them. The would-be thieves thought they'd gotten away with it, but Costco's security cameras caught on to their antics and alerted Sacramento deputies, who apprehended the couple at the store.

Shoplifting: A Sobering Reality

While this incident might seem like a peculiar example of crime in the time of bulk shopping, shoplifting remains a significant problem for retailers across the country. In fact, it's estimated that shoplifters cost American businesses billions of dollars each year.

The Numbers:

• Shoplifting costs US retailers an estimated $30 billion annually
• Cases of shoplifting in California rose by nearly 10% between 2020 and 2021

We're not here to weigh in on the moral implications or potential solutions, but rather to highlight that even at a place like Costco – where customers often feel comfortable stocking up without worrying about price tags – shoplifting can still occur.
