College Student Deported During Thanksgiving Travel Describes ICE Officer’s Intimidation

A chilling encounter between a college student and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has left many wondering about the true nature of our nation's immigration policies.

We spoke with Maria, a 21-year-old student who was deported during her Thanksgiving travel. She shared her harrowing experience, which began when she was stopped by ICE at a checkpoint while driving home from a family gathering in California.

"I was pulled over by two officers," Maria recounted. "They asked for my driver's license and registration, but it quickly became clear that they were looking for something more. They started questioning me about my immigration status, and I felt like they were trying to intimidate me."

Maria explained that she has been living in the United States since she was a child, but her parents' visa status had expired. Despite this, she has always maintained a valid student ID and proof of enrollment.

"I showed them my paperwork, but it didn't seem to matter," Maria said. "One of the officers started yelling at me, telling me that I was in the country illegally and that I needed to get out. He even implied that if I resisted or asked for a lawyer, things would escalate."

Maria described feeling scared, confused, and disbelieving during the encounter. She also expressed frustration with the lack of transparency and clarity surrounding immigration policies.

As Maria reflects on her experience, she emphasizes the importance of empathy and understanding in addressing complex issues like immigration reform. "We need to work towards creating a more inclusive and compassionate society," she said. "One where people can feel safe and respected, regardless of their background or status."
