Chinese government wades into Dutch chipmaker dispute — presses Netherlands to resolve Nexperia saga as supply concerns grow

The Chinese government has inserted itself into a contentious dispute between the Netherlands and Dutch-based semiconductor company, Nexperia. The move comes at a time when global supplies of crucial microchips are under strain.

Nexperia, which is owned by Chinese conglomerate, Wingtech, has been at odds with the Dutch authorities over its acquisition of a major facility in Nijmegen. The deal was initially blocked due to concerns about foreign ownership and security risks. However, Nexperia successfully challenged the decision and now operates the site.

Beijing has expressed support for Nexperia's position, stating that it expects the Netherlands to uphold international trade agreements. China is concerned that the saga will set a precedent for other countries to follow suit and restrict foreign investment in strategic industries.

The dispute highlights the delicate balance between global supply chains and national security concerns. As tensions escalate, it remains to be seen how this situation will play out.
