Blizzard or Bust? Breaking Down the Scenarios for a Major NYC Area Snowstorm This Weekend

This weekend, the Northeast is bracing itself for what could be a major snowstorm of the season. Forecasters are predicting heavy snowfall and high winds, with some models suggesting up to two feet of accumulation in the NYC area.

Scenario 1: The Blizzard Scenario

• The storm system strengthens as it moves northward, bringing sustained winds of 30-40mph and gusts up to 50mph. This could lead to significant drifting and blowing snow, making travel extremely hazardous.
• Rain transitions to heavy snow in the late afternoon, with totals reaching 1-2 feet by Sunday evening.

Scenario 2: The Sleet Scenario

• The storm system weakens as it approaches the NYC area, leading to a mix of rain and sleet. This could make for a messy commute on Saturday, but totals may be lower than initially predicted.
• Snowfall totals would likely be in the 6-12 inch range, with some areas seeing more than others.

Scenario 3: The Rain Scenario (Yes, It's a Possibility)

• The storm system pushes eastward too quickly, bringing rain instead of snow to the NYC area. This would be a welcome relief for many, but still poses flooding concerns.
• Rain totals could reach 1-2 inches by Sunday evening, with some areas seeing even more.
