Abandoned Southern California Mall Overrun by Vandals: 402 Police Calls Since October

The once-thriving Desert Hills Premium Outlets mall in Victorville, California has been plagued by a surge of vandalism since its closure in October. According to authorities, the abandoned shopping center has seen an astonishing 402 police calls related to trespassing, looting, and property damage.

Visitors who have braved the mall's eerie atmosphere report finding graffiti-covered walls, shattered storefronts, and even abandoned shopping carts left behind by vandals. While some might see this as a unique opportunity for urban exploration, local residents are growing increasingly concerned about safety in the area.

Why is This Happening?

The Desert Hills Premium Outlets mall was once a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. However, with the rise of online shopping and the COVID-19 pandemic, the mall's occupancy rates plummeted. Despite efforts to rebrand and revamp the property, it ultimately closed its doors in October.

• Property owners have been struggling to maintain the mall, leading to a sense of neglect and abandonment.
• The closure has also led to a significant decline in local tax revenue and job opportunities.

A Troubling Trend?

This incident raises questions about the long-term consequences of abandoning large retail spaces. As more malls continue to close across the country, it's essential for communities to develop strategies for repurposing these properties and minimizing the risk of vandalism and trespassing.
