83-year-old man convicted of killing Uber driver who he wrongly thought was scamming him

A California jury has delivered a guilty verdict against an 83-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his Uber driver, whom he mistakenly believed was involved in a scam.

The victim, identified as 32-year-old Joseph Hartounian, had picked up the defendant from San Francisco International Airport on April 23. The defendant claimed that Hartounian was part of an extortion plot and pulled out a gun after they arrived at his destination, police said.

However, investigators revealed that there was no evidence to support this claim. Instead, it appears the driver had been following standard protocol for picking up passengers. The shooting occurred in the defendant's own driveway.

The jury deliberated for several hours before returning a guilty verdict on charges of murder and assault with a firearm. Sentencing is set for July 23.
